Dr. Gregory Forzley, Chief Medical Information Officer, has recently accepted the re-appointment by Governor Rick Snyder to the Michigan Health Information Technology Commission. Dr. Forzley has advised Michigan on health technology even before 2006 when this commission was created and he served his first term.
Dr. Forzley explained that he was drawn to this commission for the same reasons that he was drawn to information technology for health in general. He realized that technology in the health system is an effective tool to better the care and quality in a more efficient manner.
“Our commission advises the Michigan Department of Community Health,” said Dr. Forzley. “We ask ‘what do we want to accomplish?’ and then measure if the state funds are being used efficiently and effectively to accomplish those goals.”
Although he is not sure how long this will take, one goal is to be able to exchange health information nationally, said Forzley.
“If I was visiting you in Florida and got hurt, they would be able to access my medical records instantly,” said Forzley.
This process of eliminating faxes and paper will cut down on wait time and create more efficient care for patients.
Dr. Forzley and the other members of the Michigan Health Information Technology Commission are continuing to work diligently to give the best advice to those who are in charge of implementing changes in technology and health for better care in Michigan.
