Phil McCorkle, Saint Mary's President and CEO
When he arrives as medical director for the Hauenstein Neuroscience Center, Dr. Philip Gorelick will bring an international reputation, a strong commitment to research and even some patients from his former Chicago practice.
Dr. Gorelick, an internationally respected expert in stroke and stroke prevention, will assume the post February 6, 2012.
His appointment is a tremendous opportunity for Saint Mary’s, for the neuroscience program and for defining what we’re all about. These kinds of opportunities are rare and together we will take full advantage of it.
We’ve got a magnificent program already, but we asked Dr. Gorelick to take us to the next level. Dr. Gorelick will lead us to that next level.
Dr. Philip Gorelick Dr. Gorelick comes from the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine in Chicago, where he has been the John S. Garvin Professor, head of the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation, and director of stroke research. He also was director of the stroke service at Michael Reese Hospital and director of the stroke and neurological critical care service at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1984.
The decision to leave his positions in Chicago was not easy for Gorelick, but he thought the people in Grand Rapids were very interested in taking this program to the next level. He believes there’s a very strong commitment to it here in Grand Rapids and wants to be a part of that. As he said, he and his wife feel that this is the right thing to do for them and for Saint Mary’s.
Dr. Gorelick, who is board certified in neurology and vascular neurology, succeeds Dr. David Kaufman, who was medical director of the Hauenstein Center since its opening in 2009. Kaufman is a professor and chairman of neurology and ophthalmology at Michigan State University.
Dr. Gorelick plans to work closely with the MSU College of Human Medicine and the Van Andel Institute.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Gorelick to this position!
